Monachira

Monachira is named for the channel that flows past the island where the camp is located. Raised on wooden decks, the camp offers sweeping views across the floodplains and wetlands stretching out before it. Botswana’s summer days can be beautifully warm, with temperatures often reaching the high 90s to low 100s °F. After an early morning safari, there is nothing quite like floating in the pool, relaxing on a lounge chair, and watching the clouds drift across the vast African sky.

Set along the edge of the Monachira Channel and close to the renowned Gudigwa heronries, the camp is ideally positioned for viewing one of the Delta’s most remarkable nesting sites. Thousands of herons, egrets, and storks gather here, creating a spectacular display for birding enthusiasts.The spacious tented deck serves as the camp’s social heart. Meet fellow travelers at the bar, unwind in the lounge, or gather around the large fire pit to share stories from the day’s adventures. It is an inviting setting that captures the spirit of an authentic safari in the bush.

Monachira offers a wonderful mix of water-based activities, island nature walks, and game drives. Located in the Moremi Game Reserve, the camp provides access to some of the Okavango Delta’s more remote and wildlife-rich areas.

Explore the waterways by motorboat, where each outing offers the possibility of seeing iconic wildlife from a different perspective. For a quieter experience, glide through water lilies in a traditional mokoro canoe, traveling at water level as birds and wildlife move through the surrounding reeds and channels.

On the islands, floodplains, and along the permanent channels of the Monachira River, guests may encounter elephants, lions, leopards, and an exceptional variety of Okavango wildlife. Keep an eye out for two of the region’s most sought-after sightings: the elusive Pel’s fishing owl and the rare sitatunga, a semi-aquatic antelope adapted to the Delta’s wetlands.
