Spanning millions of acres of unfenced protected habitat, the Greater Kruger region is one of Africa’s most celebrated and renowned safari destinations. Its wide-open savannas, golden grasslands, ancient trees, and seasonal riverbeds support an exceptional diversity of wildlife and birdlife, including the Big Five.
The region is especially known for the quality of its guiding. Highly skilled ranger-and-tracker teams read subtle signs in the bush to discover unforgettable wildlife sightings. Off-roading is a staple, creating outstanding sightings and photo opportunities and not to mention the thrilling sense of adventure. Among the Greater Kruger’s most sought-after reserves are the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve, Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, and Manyeleti Game Reserve. These locations are where wildlife can follow seasonal water, grazing, prey, and migration patterns across fenceless wilderness. Even though there is a shared ecosystem across the reserves, each has its own distinct safari experience to offer.
Probably the best known region, the Sabi Sand is famous for its abundant leopard sightings. With dense thickets and riverine woodland habitat, excellent guiding is a must while on safari here. Some of the most acclaimed safari lodges in all of South Africa can be found in the Sabi Sand. Timbavati offers a more spacious setting, with open grasslands and riverine areas that cater to a dense concentration of wildlife. It is also famously associated with white lions, but it's enduring appeal is how wildlife viewing is consistently abundant here. The neighboring Manyeleti. which means “Place of the Stars,” is a hidden gem amongst the Greater Kruger. Since it is not as well known or as developed, there are fewer vehicles, lending to a more peaceful safari experience. However, just because it is quieter in the Manyeleti does not mean that the wildlife viewing is compromised. Here you can see elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and the elusive wild dog.
Perhaps the greatest strength of the Greater Kruger area is its ability to be incorporated within any custom African itinerary, while always delivering exceptional wildlife encounters. It can be utilized with other safari regions along with Cape Town and Victoria Falls.
