Crater’s Edge

Crater's Edge is a luxury tented lodge perched on the northeastern rim of Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater, one of Africa's Seven Natural Wonders. Designed by South African architect Les Harbottle, the lodge was built to preserve and work with its natural surroundings, using locally sourced materials and a neutral palette that mirrors the landscape.

Set within a grove of acacia trees on a gently falling slope, the lodge sits just minutes from the crater floor descent road, allowing guests to begin game drives early and make the most of the wildlife-rich caldera below.

Tented Suites on the Ngorongoro Crater Rim

The lodge features stand-alone tented suites set on stilts above the acacia grove. During construction, the surrounding trees were left untouched to preserve the existing ecosystem.

Each suite includes:

  • Giant canopied bed with white linens

  • Spacious lounge with armchairs and ottoman

  • Free-standing bathtub

  • Private wooden veranda deck with seating

  • Spotting scope on every balcony for wildlife viewing

  • Double-glazed glass panels and teak wood floors

The suites look directly into the caldera. From the veranda, guests regularly spot elephants, zebras, bushbucks, and waterbucks moving through the grove below.

Wildlife and Experiences at Crater's Edge

The Ngorongoro Crater functions as a self-contained ecosystem. Because of its enclosed caldera, wildlife is concentrated year-round, making sightings consistent and varied. Guests can expect:

  • Lions, leopards, and spotted hyenas on the crater floor

  • Large elephant herds in the surrounding acacia groves

  • Zebra, buffalo, wildebeest, and black rhino within the caldera

  • Over 500 bird species have been recorded in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Beyond game drives, the lodge offers guided cultural visits, nature walks, private dining under African skies, and stargazing from the crater rim. The clear night skies allow unobstructed views of the Milky Way and the southern hemisphere constellations, including stars such as Sirius and Canopus.
