best times to visit each safari destination?

Typically the best times to go on an African safari are generally during the dry season, which is characterized as a period of low rainfall, clear skies, and minimal vegetation.

Since water sources are limited, wildlife will seek whatever remaining rivers and waterholes are left, thus making it easier to determine great wildlife viewing opportunities. The grass is also significantly shorter during the dry season, allowing for more open terrain and wildlife visibility.

The dry season is considered peak or high season for safaris, meaning this is the most popular time to go.

Seasons and Regions

June to October (Dry Season):

  • Prime wildlife viewing in famous parks across Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

  • Cooler temperatures and less rain, making the experience more comfortable.

  • Iconic events like the Great Migration river crossings between July and August in the Serengeti (Tanzania) and Masai Mara (Kenya).

  • Large elephant herds gather in places like Chobe (Botswana) and Tarangire (Tanzania).

  • Excellent for both classic game drives and walking or boat safaris

  • With clear skies and sparse bush, the dry season promises spectacular wildlife viewing.

January to March (Short Dry Season):

  • Good wildlife viewing in East Africa, especially Tanzania and Kenya. This period includes wildebeest calving in the southern Serengeti, which attracts predators and unique behaviors.

  • Lower visitor numbers compared to the main dry season, resulting in a more intimate safari experience.

October to December (Transition to Rains):

  • Wildlife can still be seen at remaining water sources, although temperatures, especially in southern Africa, can be very hot.

  • Rates at lodges may decrease, and crowd sizes diminish.

  • November marks the start of the "short rains" in East Africa, but wildlife viewing remains good, and birdwatching becomes exceptional as migratory species arrive

Keep in mind, seasonality is less predictable these days, and there are many benefits to traveling outside of Peak Season. Low season (wet/rainy season, typically November to May) offers fewer crowds and lush landscapes.
