Akagera
Situated in the rolling savannas of northwestern Rwanda, Akagera Nation Park is able to offer something different than the primate-focused destinations that Rwanda is so well known for. Here it is open plains, wetlands and lakes surrounded by forest all shaped by the winding Akagera River.
This is Rwanda’s only true savanna region. Here travelers can enjoy classic big-game viewing against beautiful landscapes. Game drives and boat safaris reveal all the plentiful wildlife, while the park’s diverse habitats support prolific birding.
However, Akagera is not just a wonderful place for safari but also a powerful conservation story. Following the 1994 genocide, Akagera was in a rough position. It has been revitalized through the partnership of the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks. With strong anti-poaching measures in place and by involving the local community, key species have been able to be reintroduced and thrive. Lions were reintroduced back in 2015, black rhinos were in 2017, and white rhinos in 2021. Large mammals have more than tripled their population and tthe park now operates self-sufficiently.
